MESA prepared a master plan and phase one design for the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in Cedar Hill, Texas. The namesake dogwoods are among several rare or endangered plant and animal species found in this 300 acre preserve of pristine forested canyon. MESA conducted a thorough analysis of sensitivity overlays, including an auditory soundscape inventory, to help the Audubon Society realize its mission to provide an educational experience in nature. School groups, researchers, and the general public can engage this fragile ecosystem through interpretive trails and the many experiential zones identified by the design team. Dogwood Canyon also features a new visitor’s center designed by Cunningham Architects, that includes a canyon viewing room, classrooms, and reception room.
