Bottom

The area south of the Trinity River, bound by I-35 and Corinth St. and adjacent to the southern levee is a small community known as Bottom. This area is primarily composed of single family homes built in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. Unfortunately, many of the residences in the area have fallen into disrepair or have been demolished leaving a once thriving community unsure of its future. Despite the dilapidation in the residences, a strong community infrastructure exists to build upon, including important institutions such as community churches, a city park, a recreation center, the future Trinity Lakes Park, and an award-winning magnet school.

Due to its strategic location adjacent to the Trinity Lakes Park and close proximity to Downtown Dallas, this area has been the focus of attention by City Staff and the public as a whole. MESA has been working with Texas Heavenly Homes to create a community wide master plan. The focus of this master plan is to preserve and enhance a sense of community and culture. MESA’s master plan brings focus to the public realm by creating pedestrian friendly streetscapes, community parks and open space, and building upon other important community infrastructure. Another priority of this plan is to develop a phase one development strategy that accommodates existing residents in the community while implementing the initial development. The housing types proposed in this plan relate to the existing homes and lot sizes in the area, but many will have a cottage feel with front porches fronting on community open space, as well as alley garages when possible. A blending of old and new with an emphasis on public space and a sense of community will give this area a new pulse and direction.
